here are the careful steps that hollywood casting directors follow when considering the male lead roles for 'blockbusters':

1. Approach Tom Cruise. if rejected go to 2
2. Approach Brad Pitt. if rejected go to 3
3. Approach Keanu Reeves. if rejected go to 4
4. Approach Ben Affleck. if rejected go to 5
5. Approach Matt Damon. if rejected go to 6
6. Approach Matthew McConaughey. if rejected go to 7
7. Approach John Cusack. if rejected go to 8
8. Approach Jude Law. if rejected go to 9
9. Approach Wesley Snipes. if rejected go to 10
10. Approach David Arquette. if rejected go to 11
11. Approach Matthew Broderick. if rejected go to 12
12. Approach Christian Slater

And there you have it...

eg. "MI:2"
Cruise accepted, they got their man

However...

eg.2 "Godzilla"
The casting department had to go through 10 gruelling steps before ending up with Matthew Broderick

oh well, at least they didn't do a "broken arrow" and end up with christian slater eh?

Exactly.
But I think this idea comes into play with any film with a pretty crap storyline or without any spectacular visual stuff...gotta add a popular actor, common sense really.

yes well, if you knew the business like I know the business...there are certain 'prestige' actors (your connerys, de niros, pacinos etc.) who are excluded from the list. they are above the system, if you will.

just like me, haha!
